13U Wildcat Baseball Wins Select Title

As the season approached for our 7th grade boys Baseball team there was a lot of uncertainty. They were taking their championship knothole team into a select league and doing so without recruiting any outside players. They would be facing teams that hold tryouts for spots on their rosters. Initially coaches Brandon Lindsey, Matt Earley and Allan Fink helped the boys set some realistic goals, "Win half our games, and one game in every tournament we played", said Brandon Lindsey of the goals set before the season.

The season began with a pre-season tournament in March where the boys won two games, finding themselves just one run shy of playing for the championship. "It was a big weight off our shoulders to win that first game and feel like we could compete. The fact that we almost made it to the finals was really promising", said coach Lindsey. Then the regular season came and the boys won their first two games. "After that second win I told the boys "We won't win this league but that's a great start. It wasn't long before they had me eating my words." , said Lindsey.

The Wildcats rolled through their league with a record of 9-0-1 winning the title by 2 and a half games. The one tie caused due to darkness was later avenged with a run rule victory against the same team. They went on to be runners-up in The Mothers Day Classic Tournament missing first on tie breaker points. Then in Late June in a 15 team field at the Bronze Bash the Wildcats rolled the competition winning 4 games, using only 5 pitchers, scoring 35 runs and allowing just 4 runs. They won the Championship game 10-0 in 6 innings.

"They surprised me and I think they surprised themselves. We started working in November with a pitching coach and we got in the gym when we could to hit into nets. Some of the boys were hitting after school in one of our coaches basements over the winter as well. We didn't realize until the wins started to pile up just how much that work would pay off. We were winning our league, we were beating teams in tournaments that traveled 4 hours to get there and we were full of confidence." added Lindsey. "We have a goal to do some very special Baseball things in High School. We are trying a different approach and keeping them all together in the select experience.  This was one step towards those goals. We will give the boys a little time off, then they'll be working on the side while they play fall and winter sports. Next season we will up the competition level again."

The 13U Wildcats went an impressive 33-13-1 in 2018 playing Bronze, Silver, Gold and travel teams. They easily accomplished and surpassed those early season goals. Did we mention they are all Williamsburg Middle School kids?   We look forward to seeing them take the next step next spring.
